Mannix College Celebrates 50 Years of Coeducation on International Women’s Day
In a milestone that marks half a century of inclusivity and diversity, Mannix College, affiliated with Monash University, commemorated the 50th anniversary of its transition to coeducation. This historic event occurred on International Women’s Day, March 8, 2024, drawing attention to the college’s longstanding commitment to gender equality.
Held in the Dining Hall and attended by more than 80 residents, the celebration reflected the past and looked towards the future as the college honoured its pioneering women who first walked through its doors in 1974. This transformative year saw Mannix welcome its first cohort of female students, setting a precedent for coeducation at a time when global shifts toward gender equality were gaining momentum.
The event showcased a remarkable roster of speakers, consisting exclusively of Old Collegians who are mothers and daughters. Jo Lindquist, a member of that first cohort of women in 1974, shared the stage with her daughter, Anthea Lindquist, who followed in her mother’s footsteps 30 years later. Katie Allen, class of 1984, and her daughters, Jemima Allen (2019) and Arabella Allen (2021), also spoke at the event. Their participation underscored Mannix College’s multi-generational influence, a testament to how it has shaped not just careers but family traditions of excellence and leadership, a legacy that commands our admiration.
Their shared narratives were a powerful testament to Mannix College’s enduring legacy of commitment to coeducation. Personal stories highlighted the college’s profound and positive impact, illustrating how it has positively touched and transformed individual lives and families across generations.
The celebration on International Women’s Day was a powerful reminder of the strides made in gender equality and the role educational institutions like Mannix play in fostering an environment of inclusivity. Reflecting on the 50 years since the college’s pivotal shift to coeducation, attendees were reminded of the importance of championing diversity and equality for generations to come.
“Bringing together such an esteemed and diverse group of women who are also Old Collegians is brilliant. Their messaging for our residents was perfect in both tone and content. I am grateful to be able to bring them all to the stage at one time.” – Annie McGuire, Dean of Students & Wellbeing
