Gryphon Gala 2025

Celebrating Connection, Community and Contribution

Held in late November 2025, the Gryphon Gala saw the Mannix community return to where it all began.

For many, stepping back onto the College grounds brought an immediate rush of memories. Familiar pathways, shared spaces and old traditions sparked laughter, nostalgia and easy conversation. Friendships were rekindled, stories resumed as if no time had passed, and faces once known so well came into focus again, older perhaps, but instantly recognisable.

More than an alumni reunion dinner, the Gryphon Gala is a homecoming. It is a moment to reconnect with the people, places and experiences that shaped our time at Mannix, and a reminder that the College remains a community for life.

The 2025 Gala brought together Old Collegians and their partners, past and present parents, friends of the College, and our 2025 departing residents and their families. Reunion groups from the Classes of 1975, 1985, 1995, 2005 and 2015 were formally recognised, while departing residents were welcomed into the Mannix Old Collegians Association, marking their transition into lifelong connection with the College.

2025 Award Recipients

A highlight of the evening was the presentation of the 2025 Alumni & StaffΒ  Awards, recognising alumni and staff whose journeys reflect the values of community, leadership, service and purpose at the heart of Mannix.

Andrew Swan, Principal of Mannix College

Distinguished Alumni Award - Tom Palmer

Mannix-GryphonGala-2025-092

Tom Palmer (1986) was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award in recognition of his leadership and contribution to the global mining industry.

Currently the 10th Chief Executive Officer in Newmont’s 104-year history, Tom has led the company through a period of significant transformation since his appointment in 2019. Reflecting on what has driven his career, he shared, β€œWhat has motivated me over my working life is the opportunity to make a difference.”

Tom was joined on the night by his wife Clare, whom he met at Mannix, along with many friends they first connected with during their College years. Their presence was a visible reminder of the lifelong friendships and relationships that often begin at Mannix and endure across decades.

Looking back on his time at College, Tom encouraged current residents to make the most of the experience, saying, β€œStarting with your time at Mannix – take a risk, back yourselves, have a go and make sure you enjoy it as you do so.”

Outstanding Alumni Award - Alana Kilmartin

Mannix-GryphonGala-2025-094

The Outstanding Alumni Award was presented to Alana Kilmartin (2013), founder of Unserious Careers, for her work inspiring young people to think differently about careers and impact.

After speaking to more than 15,000 students across Australia this year, Alana reflected on the responsibility she feels in her work, saying, β€œSomething I say may change their life and I take that responsibility very seriously.”

Alana was joined at the Gala by her partner and family, celebrating the milestone together and recognising the support behind her journey and growing impact.

Reflecting on her time at Mannix, Alana credited the College with shaping her understanding of community and contribution, noting, β€œMannix showed me what a community really was and the importance of not just being part of the community but actively contributing to it.”

Rising Star Award - Lauren Dillon

Valete24-194

The Rising Star Award recognised Lauren Dillon, a science honours student and environmental advocate working across community engagement, renewable energy and policy.

Lauren was unable to attend the event but shared that her approach to opportunity and growth, sharing, β€œI have always lived with the philosophy that you should say yes to every opportunity that comes your way.”

Her advice to current residents reflected the values she developed during her time at Mannix, β€œFiercely follow your passions, advocate for things when you think they will make a positive impact, and be kind to strangers.”

Staff Recognition Award - Mercedes Barner

Mannix-GryphonGala-2025-053

The Staff Recognition Award celebrated Mercedes Barner for the warmth, care, and welcome she has brought to everyday life at Mannix College since 2012.

Mercedes was joined on the night by her colleagues from the dining hall, alongside members of her family, a fitting reflection of the teamwork, care and community she helps create each day.

Speaking about her approach, Mercedes emphasised the importance of helping students feel at ease. β€œI take the initiative to approach them, making sure they feel welcome,” she said, highlighting listening and acknowledgement as central to her role.

Her advice to residents was heartfelt and straightforward: β€œRespect one another. Be open and honest. Always help where you can.”

A Community That Endures

The Gryphon Gala was a celebration not only of individual achievement but of the enduring Mannix community. With alumni spanning five decades, alongside staff, families and friends, the night reaffirmed the importance of connection, shared values and mutual support.

Whether returning for a reunion, celebrating a milestone, or marking the transition from resident to Old Collegian, the Gala remains a powerful reminder that Mannix is a place you may leave, but a community you remain part of for life.

At Mannix, Christmas in July is about the spirit of giving, not through material presents, but through something far more meaningful: the gift of our time, service, and showing up for others. As a collective, our impact extends well beyond these walls into the broader community. 🀝

We welcomed representatives from our valued community service partners: St Andrew’s Primary School, Villa Maria Catholic Homes, and the Red Frogs.

Thank you to our guests for joining us, and to our residents for continuing to embody what it truly means to give back. πŸ’«

Great colleges are built across generations. Each generation inherits something special, adds to it, and leaves it stronger than they found it.

Today, Principal Andrew Swan has shared a personal letter announcing that he will conclude his five-year term as Principal of Mannix College on 18 December 2026, before commencing as Head of College at University College, The University of Melbourne, in 2027.
