Celebrating Academic Excellence

April 12, 2024

On March 27, the College recognised 44 residents who achieved academic excellence in the Semester 2, 2023 study period.

The residents took the stage at an Academic Awards Formal Dinner attended by the College Residents, Academic Guides, Staff, and Esteemed Guests. The College announced the recipients of the coveted Knox Scholarship Awards and recognised residents who earned Academic Excellence awards by achieving a High-Distinction average. The full list of recipients is at the bottom of this article.

We were honoured to have Prof Chris Thompson, Director of Education for the Biomedical Discovery Institute at Monash University, as our keynote speaker. Chris shared some valuable insights about resilience and leaning on your community when things are not going your way, a critical message to share on an evening highlighting the achievements and commitment of our residents. We also welcomed Prof Bryan Horrigan and Prof Sarah McDonald from Monash University to present the awards.

The Knox Scholarships are awarded in memory of Cardinal James Robert Knox, Archbishop of Melbourne between 1967 and 1974, who blessed and laid the foundation stone at Mannix College on Thursday, May 23, 1968. Knox Scholarships were awarded to the highest-performing resident in each faculty and included a cash prize of $750 provided by the Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne.

The College is pleased to support and recognise those residents who have demonstrated academic excellence and notes how competitive these awards are, especially given the high quality of Mannix students.

The College is committed to offering residents a robust academic program to assist them in achieving their academic goals. Every Tuesday evening of the Semester, The College delivers an in-person academic workshop and subject-specific support from our Academic Guides and Mentors team. This provides a crucial bridge between the College and the learning support offered by Monash University.

The College congratulates all students on their academic efforts and progress.

Great colleges are built across generations. Each generation inherits something special, adds to it, and leaves it stronger than they found it.

Today, Principal Andrew Swan has shared a personal letter announcing that he will conclude his five-year term as Principal of Mannix College on 18 December 2026, before commencing as Head of College at University College, The University of Melbourne, in 2027.

Read Andrew's full letter via the news section of our website.

💙 As EOFY approaches, we want to say thank you.

To everyone who has supported the 2026 Mannix Foundation Annual Appeal; your generosity is helping students access opportunity, connection, support and community.

Over the past few weeks, we've shared the stories of Caitlin, Jack, Kyra, Neve and Declan. Their experiences show that scholarships are about so much more than financial support - they help create life-changing opportunities.

Every donation, big or small, helps make the Mannix experience possible for future students.

If you've been thinking about making a contribution, there's still time before 30 June.

✨ Your Gift. Their Future.

“The one thing I would like donors to know, is that if it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t be here. They’ve given me the opportunity…”

Declan had moved all the way from Mackay in Queensland to pursue his dream of becoming a doctor.

Receiving Mannix Foundation Scholarship has made his journey possible, giving him access to the support and resources he needs to succeed.

Every gift helps create opportunity, belonging and support for students who need it most.

From little things, big things grow. 🌿

Three years ago, students at Mannix started Together We Grow, a living wall of reconciliation.

Each tile carries a person's initials and thumbprint, a lasting reminder of their commitment to learning, respect, truth-telling and reconciliation.

What began as a student idea has become a growing community legacy.

One tile. One commitment. One step forward.

Thank you to the many student leaders who have shaped this project through our Indigenous Advisory Committee, and to Johnson Tiles Australia for their generous donation of 1,000 tiles.

Together, we grow.

Year by year. Tile by tile. Commitment by commitment.

We look forward to the day this wall is filled with the initials, thumbprints and shared commitments of generations of the Mannix community.

“Being surrounded by so many talented and smart people at Mannix really pushes you to do better”

Meet Neve, a third generation Mannixian pursuing her love of Maths and Engineering.

After working long hours throughout her first year to support herself, Neve found the demands of balancing work and study took a toll on her academic results.

Every year, we line up, squeeze in, and try to capture the “perfect” shot 📸✨ A snapshot of a moment in time in the colleges history.

It’s more than just a class photo - it’s a yearly tradition, with each one added to the collection dating back to the very first cohort in 1969.

Five APSAA Excellence Awards. Three years. We’re deeply grateful, genuinely humbled, and very proud.

Last night in Adelaide, Mannix was recognised once again at the APSAA Excellence Awards, the leading awards program for university accommodation across the Asia-Pacific region.

🏆 Best Development Award, for our residential wings refurbishment project

🏆 Best Student Experience Program, for our Young Hearts partnership with Villa Maria Catholic Homes

These awards build on previous APSAA recognition in Sustainability, Student Experience, and Facility Development across 2024–2026.

Principal Andrew Swan was proud, and a little emotional, to accept the awards on behalf of the entire Mannix community and the many wonderful people who help make this place what it is.

Thank you to our staff, students, Council, partners, alumni, supporters, and friends. These achievements belong to all of you.
