A New Chapter for Bishop Anthony Ireland

We are proud to share the news that our College Council Chair, Bishop Anthony (Tony) Ireland, has been appointed by Pope Leo as the next Archbishop of Hobart.
“With a heart full of quiet joy, I have received the news of this appointment, humbled and grateful for the trust placed in me to shepherd a diocese.”
— Bishop Tony
Since 2022, Bishop Tony has led the Mannix College Council with wisdom, humility, and deep pastoral care. His leadership has extended well beyond the boardroom—he’s been a gracious and consistent presence in College life, attending student leadership training, formal dinners, community events, and College celebrations.
Whether offering quiet encouragement or speaking boldly about our shared values, Bishop Tony has led with both head and heart.
“Bishop Tony has been a generous and gentle leader of our College Council. His presence at Mannix has meant a great deal to our students, staff and community—and we are stronger for his care and counsel. We will miss him greatly, but Tasmania is gaining a shepherd of integrity, compassion, and vision.”
— Andrew Swan, Principal
A new Chair of the Mannix College Council will be appointed by the Archbishop of Melbourne, and we look forward to sharing that news in due course.
For now, we give heartfelt thanks for Bishop Tony’s enduring contribution to the Mannix story, and we hold him in our prayers as he prepares to take up this sacred responsibility in Tasmania.
