Mannix Victorious Over St Mary’s College
After a five-year pause, one of our favourite college traditions stormed back as Mannix and St Maryโs reignited their spirited rivalry with a day of football, friendship, and plenty of fun.
Held on Sunday 10 August at Monash University, the matches drew students, staff, and alumni from both Mannix College and St Maryโs College, University of Melbourneโunited by shared history and the joy of competition. The day reminded everyone that this tradition is about more than results: itโs about connection, community, and celebrating what makes college life unique.
โThis was more than just a game,โ said Mannix Principal Andrew Swan. โIt was two great colleges coming together to showcase their talent, honour tradition, and strengthen the bonds of friendship that run deep between our communities.โ
The Games
The womenโs clash set the tone early, with Mannix asserting dominance from the first bounce and never letting go: Mannix 7.9 (51) def St Maryโs 0.1 (1). Best on Ground went to Ailsa Gome (Mannix), whose pressure and ball-winning ability inspired her teammates across four quarters.
The menโs match followed with a fierce contest. Mannix controlled the tempo, moving the ball with confidence and finishing strongly: Mannix 14.20 (104) def St Maryโs 1.4 (10). Will Eggins (Mannix) earned Best on Ground for his tireless running and impact around the ground.
The Spirit of the Day
On the sidelines, the energy was just as strong. Supporters cheered every play, alumni swapped stories of past match-ups, and the celebrations rolled on well after the final sirenโfirst with a shared dinner in the Mannix Dining Hall, followed by a lively evening party at a nearby venue.
Plans are already underway for the 2026 fixture, when Mannix will make the trip across to St Maryโs turfโpromising another day of footy, friendship, and college pride.
As Swan put it: โThese events remind us why traditions matterโthey bring people together, celebrate our shared story, and leave us looking forward to the next chapter.โ
